Don’t you feel excited when you go on a trip and hold a banknote of that country in your hand?🤩 There are so many different types of banknotes in the world, each with its own unique design. Both Singapore and Japan have changed their banknote designs several times in their history.

In July, Japan introduced a new design for its banknotes, and one standout figure is Shibusawa Eiichi, now featured on the ¥10,000 note.  His story of blending ethical business practices with social responsibility makes him a fascinating figure worth learning about. 📚

Shibusawa Eiichi, born in 1840, is often called the "father of Japanese capitalism." He was a major player in modernising Japan’s economy, starting over 500 businesses! 🏢He helped set up Japan's first bank, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and the Tokyo Gas Company. What’s interesting is his belief in doing business ethically, blending good morals with making money.

But Shibusawa wasn’t just about business. He cared a lot about education and helping others, founding many schools, hospitals, and charities.🏫🏥 I think his emphasis on social responsibility along with business success is something Singaporeans can relate to.

In Singapore’s history, our banknotes have featured images of orchids, birds, boats, and people. Similarly, Japan’s new banknotes celebrate important figures like Shibusawa Eiichi. When I first saw Singaporean banknotes, I was surprised they are made of polymer, and I enjoyed looking at the front and back of the various bills.✨✨

It's also a great opportunity to learn about Japanese culture and history by studying the people featured on their banknotes. If you’re interested, why not look it up?😊👐
