Do You Know Shiritori?đŁïž
Have you heard of the word game called Shiritori?đ€
Shiritori is a traditional Japanese word game that dates back to the Heian period.
In this game, players take turns saying a word that begins with the last syllable of the previous word.Â
For example, the sequence might go "shiritori" â "ringo" (appleđ) â "goma" (sesame).Â
The game ends when a player uses a word that ends with " n," as there are no Japanese words that begin with that syllable.
The name "Shiritori" literally means "taking the end," referring to the use of the last syllable of the preceding word. đ§
Initially, it was played among the aristocracy as a literary pastime and became part of Japan's rich tradition of wordplay.Â
Over time, Shiritori gained popularity across all social classes and evolved into a common game.đ
For Japanese language learners, Shiritori is a great opportunity to practice vocabulary and have fun at the same time.âïž
I tried playing Shiritori in my class before, and it was very engaging as everyone helped each other think of words they knew. đ€©
Some of my students even use WhatsApp to play Shiritori during their free time, finding it a fun way to interact with the Japanese language.đČđŻđ”
I encourage everyone to give Shiritori a try!âšâš
